Maircraft Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless, 1/48, H-8

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless

$24

From the 1940s. Features 3D cut fuselage, nicely 2D cut wings and tail feathers, stock wood, printwood, fully formed turned wheels and engine nacelle, full color decals (which are water stained) and excellent full-sized plans. Never started and complete. Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work.

Jack Mair, a former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. Mair continued with the same logo and 1/48 scale and went on to make one of the rarest and valuable 1/48 scale wooden kits ever - the Maircraft DC-3. Ryan STM-2 - Combat Planes Of America Series - Solid Wood Aircraft

$29

Rare, large 1/32 scale solid model from 1942. At that time, their were 'fliers' and 'solids.' 'Fliers' were notoriously off-scale and lacked detail so they would fly well. 'Solids' were true scale models that were solid wood and designed only to be scale miniatures (they did not fly). This kit has a very worn box but inside everything is in very good condition. Features a 12 inch wingspan, balsa blocks and wood stock, printwood, color insignia sheet and quality plans with construction notes, cross section templates as well as a painting guide. Never started and complete. Marvel Mfg. Company was located in Seaford, Long Island, New York and had an extensive line of solid aircraft, wooden ships, army tanks and more. Just as a small example, the following are advertised on the back of this larger-scale solid kit: Grumman JRF-2, Mariner PBM-1, Bell YFM-1, P-38, P-40, Baltimore, Ryan STM-2, Curtiss AT-9, Douglas A-20A, Republic Guardsman, Grumman Skyrocket and Douglas 8A-5.

Airfix Hawker Hunter - Craftmaster Issue, 1/72, 1212-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Hawker Hunter - Craftmaster Issue

$22

This is a Type 3 logo kit from the 1960s with great box art. As you can see, two Hunters are at very high altitude and shooting at what appears to be a red jet-powered drone in Spanish Nationalist markings. This model has never been started. It is inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Did you notice the rather strange looking drone on the box art? I often wondered about it's (possible) origins. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes, it is a Jindivik Australian target drone developed and built by GAF (Government Aircraft Factories) Australia. Development began in 1948. The piloted prototype, named Pika, flew in October of 1950, while the first unmanned Jindivik Mk.1 flew in August 1952. Only 14 Mk.1s were built and powered by a single Armstrong-Siddeley Adder ASA.1 turbojet. The Mk.2 began production in 1953 with the Bristol Siddeley Viper ASV.3 engine. A total of 190 Mk. 2 Jindiviks were built and were known as Mk.102 in Great Britain service. Mk.3s numbered 150 total production. They were called Mk.103a in UK service and Mk.203A by the Royal Australian Navy. In 1964/65, 42 Mk.3As were delivered to the US Navy and designated Mk.303A. They did not have USN serial numbers or standard US Navy target drone designation. By 1968 there were not longer being used in the USN and at least 14 were transferred to the UK. Mk.3A were followed by 126 Mk.3B and even a Mk.4A which was built only in the UK. Over 500 were built total and used into the early 2000s.

Revell 1913 Mercedes Highway Pioneers - Series 4, 1/32, H54-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

1913 Mercedes Highway Pioneers - Series 4

$40

1954 original issue of the famous Highway Pioneers 'Foreign Car' series. These issues feature the same 5 car artwork on every box; the only way to identify the contents was an ink-stamped name on the box ends. Molded in gloss dark green plastic. This kit has never been started. All parts are still in the factory sealed bag. Includes instructions. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!
