Beautiful kit from the 1950s made of quality Western Pine hardwood - no balsa. The carving is done to the final shape and when completed it makes an impressive model. Features all carved and smooth wood parts, clear plastic canopy, full color decals, glue, sandpaper and a special hardwood 'teardrop' shaped display stand with a preformed 'flight wire' model holder. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - you only had to glue, sand and paint to finish them.

Still factory tape sealed. Rare. Nicely detailed, limited-run resin kit. The Samolyot 5-2 (or Bisnovat 5) was a Russian manned rocketplane. Bisnovat was assigned the project to develop an all-Soviet equivalent to the 346 supersonic rocketplane being developed by the German Roessing team in OKB-2.Status: canceled 1949. Thrust: 19.60 kN (4,406 lbf). Gross mass: 3,400 kg (7,400 lb). Unfueled weight: 1,900 kg (4,100 lb). Height: 9.92 m (32.54 ft). Span: 6.60 m (21.60 ft).Like the 346, the 5 was a swept-wing aircraft, but about 2/3 the size. First glide flight by A K Pakhomov, dropped from a Pe-8, came on 14 July 1948. The first 5-1 aircraft was destroyed on its third flight 5 September 1948. The 5-2 second aircraft, with RD-2M3BF rocket engine installed, made its first flight on 26 January 1949. After five unpowered flights, the program was cancelled in June 1949. By that time better-funded turbojet-powered fighter prototypes were already achieving the 1200 km/hr top speed of the 5. Biesnovat and Isayev would elaborate the design in unmanned form into the supersonic R-1 air-to-surface missile.

1957 hardbox issue with the Parents' Magazine seal. Please note that this is an earlier issue with 'Famous Fighters' in the oval border of the Aurora logo and is has the '.29' cent price extension. This small scale kit has dramatic Jo Kotula box artwork and is nicely molded kit with clear canopy, full landing gear and display stand. This is a model of the very early YF-102 prototype with the straight (non-area rule) fuselage. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. Around this time, Aurora issued a series of inexpensive (usually 29 cent) small scale kits that were designed to sell at almost any type of retail location. The line was successful and further expanded - when Aurora purchased the Comet molds, they fit in nicely with this established line.
