SNAP G.I. Soldiers - ex Revell GI Figure Set - (GI Soldiers), 1/40, 5149-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

G.I. Soldiers - ex Revell GI Figure Set - (GI Soldiers)

$89

Rare model from the original 1950s Revell "S" Issue molds. Very highly detailed and includes the following figures - general, radioman, 2 bazooka men, 2 mortar men with mortar, 2 machine gunners with tripod and machine gun, soldier with mine detector, soldier with flame thrower and 9 other infantrymen. Molded in olive drab plastic. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. It is assumed that these were cut by Revell or much more likely one of their contractors in the mid-late 1950s; perhaps they used Adam's mold cutter. On the surface, there is no sign that they were to be parts of the joint Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. However, Adams must have had the molds because when the famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds, they ended up with the Soldiers. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. This GI Soldier kit is made in the USA. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

Cleveland Laird Solution 1930 Thompson Trophy Winner - 10.63 Inch Wingspan Free-Flight Rubber Powered Flying Aircraft, 1/24, D-46

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Laird Solution 1930 Thompson Trophy Winner - 10.63 Inch Wingspan Free-Flight Rubber Powered Flying Aircraft

$55

Very rare and from the mid 1930s to the early 1940s. This is a Cleveland 'D' or dwarf kit. The term 'Dwarf' is just a bit deceptive, as it is Cleveland's designation for 1/24 scale. Most Cleveland kits were designated 'SF' or Scale Flying - 1/16 scale. The Dwarf kits were needed to fill a market demand for smaller flying models. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and Dwarfs were no exception, containing very high quality balsa printwood, stringers & spars, fully formed wheels, covering tissue, a wood propeller that is about 90% carved and just needs final sanding, gray rigging thread (if required), metal and balsa stock as required and more. With Cleveland's famous high-quality plans. While the box has significant wear, the kit inside is still 'factory tissue sealed.' When the Cleveland workers packed each kit, they wrapped them in tissue that effectively made a seal which has not been disturbed. Whoever buys it will be the first one to see the contents since it was packed in the factory over 90 years ago. Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business - Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter - Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Revenue Cutter - 12 Inch Long Wooden Model With Moulded Hull

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Revenue Cutter - 12 Inch Long Wooden Model With Moulded Hull

$54

Rare ship model from 1930s that contains Ideal's revolutionary 'Premolded Hull.' Since carving the hull was by far the most difficult part of early ship modeling, Ideal created a thick-walled, completely formed, hollow hull made from a wood composite. Never started. Inside, the kit is exactly as it left the factory which means that all the parts are still 'factory tissue sealed.' As was the custom back then, workers would assembly the parts for a kit and wrap them in tissue paper in a unique way that ensured that all the parts would be 'sealed' and held in place. Whoever buys this kit will see the contents for the first time since it was packed at Ideal Aeroplane & Supply in New York well over 90 years ago. Ideal Aeroplane & Supply was one of the earliest aircraft model makers in the USA, marketing their first kit in 1911 and running a well-known storefront that sold materials as well as kits for early aeromodelers. What is less known is that they had a very large line of ship kits also. They ranged from one foot to several feet long and covered unique and popular civil subjects as well as warships and submarines of the period. The company was very innovative in introducing the Moulded Hull which cut assembly time by more than half by eliminating all hull carving, shaping and sanding. The builder could use it right out-of-the-box and immediately add the deck, superstructure, fittings and prime or paint. Ideal was also known for their excellent, full size multi-view plans that includes many assembly notes, rigging diagrams, tips, additional detail drawings and much more. Often there was even a detailed painting guide.
