Cleveland Howard Pete Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-18

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Howard Pete Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit

$78

From the 1930s. This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit is in the older cardboard box with 'Cleveland World Famous Models' in silver print. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, fully formed wheels, thrust button and spinner, pre-drilled nose block, other blocks as required, CDs famous black fibre propeller, metal and wood stock and more. Includes CDs highest quality plans. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and plans/instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

SNAP Hawk Missile Carrier - (ex Adams), 1/40, 159

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Hawk Missile Carrier - (ex Adams)

$52

Rare early 1960s model from the original 1950s Adams molds. Well molded and detailed for that time featuring three Hawk Missiles, movable wheels and flexible tracks, elevating lift & supports, three figures and decals. Molded in gloss white and dark olive drab plastic. Never started and all parts and decals are still in the original factory-sealed bag. With instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. The molds were cut in 1955 or 1956, either at Adams or by one of Revell's contractors. It appeared to be part of the Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Revell never issued the kit. The famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name (SNAP) & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. This Hawk Missile Carrier kit is made in the USA but is actually a SNAP export to Canada; the importer was 'International Games of Canada Limited' in 'New Toronto Ontario.' They used a silver overprint to block out the kit number and pric extension and then added '#159 in Canada.' Then UPC (Universal Power Master) either leased or purchased (probably the former) the Adams molds from SNAP in the 1960s. While most UPC kits say 'Made in Japan' the ex-Adams models do not and say 'Made in USA'. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

Aurora Nieuport 11, 1/48, 101-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Nieuport 11

$42

First issue from 1956 with the one-year-only 'Northern Lights' rectangular logo. The artwork is by Jim Cox. This is a fine model for that time and includes a pilot, basic cockpit, machine gun, wing-mounted rockets, ground display with chocks and a ground crew member as well. Molded in the correct gloss olive drab and black plastic. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. This kit is one of a very successful line of 1/48 WWI aircraft that Aurora launched in 1956. The line sold so well that new kits were added into the 1960s. Thanks to Eugene DuBey, we know some history on the aircraft that Aurora modeled. The tail # on the kit rudder is 1354, the number of a Nie 16 that served with "CAM de Dunquerke / St Pol sur Mer", 1916-17.

SNAP G.I. Soldiers - ex Revell GI Figure Set - (GI Soldiers), 1/40, 5149-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

G.I. Soldiers - ex Revell GI Figure Set - (GI Soldiers)

$89

Rare model from the original 1950s Revell "S" Issue molds. Very highly detailed and includes the following figures - general, radioman, 2 bazooka men, 2 mortar men with mortar, 2 machine gunners with tripod and machine gun, soldier with mine detector, soldier with flame thrower and 9 other infantrymen. Molded in olive drab plastic. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. These molds must have had a very interesting history. It is assumed that these were cut by Revell or much more likely one of their contractors in the mid-late 1950s; perhaps they used Adam's mold cutter. On the surface, there is no sign that they were to be parts of the joint Adams/Revell 1/40 line but Adams never issued the kit. However, Adams must have had the molds because when the famous HO model train manufacturer Athearn purchased the Adams molds, they ended up with the Soldiers. Ahtearn used the name SNAP for all plastic kit releases and slightly modified the molds by adding their name & logo to a part (or two) of each kit. This GI Soldier kit is made in the USA. Things get even more interesting with the Life-Like issue. How Life-Like came across the molds is unfortunately unknown but it may have been in a bulk purchase of molds from Athearn since there were in the same general part of the country. This is simply conjecture, however.

Cleveland Laird Solution 1930 Thompson Trophy Winner - 10.63 Inch Wingspan Free-Flight Rubber Powered Flying Aircraft, 1/24, D-46

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Laird Solution 1930 Thompson Trophy Winner - 10.63 Inch Wingspan Free-Flight Rubber Powered Flying Aircraft

$55

Very rare and from the mid 1930s to the early 1940s. This is a Cleveland 'D' or dwarf kit. The term 'Dwarf' is just a bit deceptive, as it is Cleveland's designation for 1/24 scale. Most Cleveland kits were designated 'SF' or Scale Flying - 1/16 scale. The Dwarf kits were needed to fill a market demand for smaller flying models. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and Dwarfs were no exception, containing very high quality balsa printwood, stringers & spars, fully formed wheels, covering tissue, a wood propeller that is about 90% carved and just needs final sanding, gray rigging thread (if required), metal and balsa stock as required and more. With Cleveland's famous high-quality plans. While the box has significant wear, the kit inside is still 'factory tissue sealed.' When the Cleveland workers packed each kit, they wrapped them in tissue that effectively made a seal which has not been disturbed. Whoever buys it will be the first one to see the contents since it was packed in the factory over 90 years ago. Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze.
