Aircraft History and SpecificationIn 1943, the Douglas began a company funded study to a high speed bomber design which was not liked the traditional wing mounting engines. It was an unusual idea to install the two engines within the fuselage, driving a pair of propellers mounted at the tail. That can leaving the wing and fuselage clean and free of aerodynamics-reducing protrusions. Douglas submitted an unsolicited proposal to USAAF, and was awarded a contract for two prototypes. The first prototype first flew in May 1944. Performance was excellent as described in the original proposal. The second prototype joined the flight test program in August, 1944, and was destroyed in crash in December 1945. By the end of war and the jet-powered bomber soon be forthcoming, the Army Air Force had decided that the XB-42 would not be put into the production. The surviving XB-42 was continued for tests and modification until 1948. But what the XB-42 is really famous for is when Douglas proposed to modify the existing XB-42 airframe, then replaced the piston engines with a pair of turbojets for saving time and cost. This became the XB-43 and the first USA built all-jet bomber to fly.

Rare. This is the 1942 Deluxe 'large box' issue of this incredibly well detailed flying model. Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' modeles in museum scale of 1/16 were very complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood, factory cut stringers and spars, other wood stock as required, fully formed main and tail wheels & thrust button, balsa blocks and sheeting wood, metal stock, covering material and superb CD plans with instructions. The kit has never been started. Inventoried complete with all parts and paperwork present. This is a wartime issue and so as usual there are no fluids (glue or dope). Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. Very highly detailed resin kit. The parts are still in the internally sealed bags. Includes decals and instructions. With the success of the German jet bomber Ar.234 in 1944, USAAF became aware of enemy aviation advances. The war department issued a requirement for a new design of jet bomber which was powered by either the J35 or J47 engine. From this, the Martin company submitted the Model 223. It was awarded contract for two prototypes which were then designated XB-48. Other designs which entered the competition included the North American XB-45, Convair XB-46 and the Boeing XB-47. The USAAF needed urgently needed a jet-bomber, so in 1946 they chose the flight-tested B-45 as the winner. Any decision on the XB-47 and XB-48 were deferred until they had tested. The first XB-48 made its maiden flight in 1947 but engine difficulties delayed development and testing. In 1948 the XB-47 was ready for testing and quickly beat the XB-48 in a fly-off; the XB-47 with its swept wing had much better performance. Martin attempted further work on the design, but it was rejected by the Air Force. Flight tests of the XB-48s continued until the program was terminated in the fall of 1949.

Still factory sealed. This excellent kit is crisply molded and features all fine recessed panel lines, resin details, many brass PE parts, an excellent cockpit, detailed wheel wells and optional parts to build either the prototype or the planned production version. Includes two sets of decals. The original Ki-94 (the 'I' variant) was to be a twin-boom design intended to intercept the B-29 Superfortress. However, the Japanese Army Air Force decided that it was too complicated, made too many 'leaps forward' and that the performance over overly optimistic. The 'II' variant (this kit) was a much more conventional design that still offered a great improvement over existing interceptors. It was designed for high-altitude battle and had a pressurized cockpit and very heavy armament. This design was approved by the Koku Hombu, and the aircraft was designated Ki-94-II (the scrapped earlier Ki-94 design was named the Ki-94-I). An order was placed for one static test airframe, three prototypes, and eighteen pre-production aircraft. Only 2 prototypes were built; the first was equipped with a single Nakajima Ha-44 engine driving a 4-blade propeller because the 6-blade prop was not ready. The second prototype was to be fitted with the correct propeller. But as with many other project, the approaching end of the war and shortage of resources brought a halt to the construction of the second prototype. At the end of the war, the first prototype still being readied for its maiden flight and although complete, probably did not fly.

Still factory sealed but the seal has splits. Very nicely detailed, large 1/8 scale model features nine cylinders, crankcase, carburetor with sliding valve, accessory drive gears, oil pump, magneto, full wiring and display stand. The 80 hp Le Rhone was developed before WWI and was used in many early aircraft. It did see service early in the Great War and it's follow on, the 110 hp Le Rhone was used in larger aircraft. The crankshaft of the Le Rhone mounted directly to the firewall and was part of the air and fuel intake system. The crankcase, propeller shaft and cylinders all revolved at about 1200 rpm. These three assemblies were carefully balanced to reduce vibration.

At long last, an injection molded model of Fiddler's Three-Cockpit Trainer. Nicely detailed with over 100 pieces, all recessed surface detail, very good triple cockpits, optional position canopies, separately molded ailerons, trailing edge flaps, elevators & rudder, detailed landing gear, four K-80 missiles and more. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The giant Fiddler is still the world's largest fighter aircraft and was designed to range far and wide to hunt down B-52 bombers. The Soviet Union had such a large northern border that it could not be covered with the existing range surface-to-air missiles and the short-ranged fighters available. Instead of leaving large gaps unprotected, PVO opted for defending the entire front but loosely; the Fiddler was the result of this policy. The original design for this task was the La-250, which was unsuccessful and Lavochkin's last aircraft. The lessons learned helped develop the Tu-128. The large fuel load was carried internally while all the missiles were carried on wing pylons. The AA-5 "Ash" was one of the most powerful air-to-air missiles at that time. The aircraft was first shown publicly in 1961. 198 were built and production ended in 1970. Fiddler was not a dogfighter or highly sophisticated but was reliable. The only 'combat' experienced by this type was in shooting down NATO reconnaissance balloons. Fiddler had a very long service life, being replaced in 1990 by the much more capable Mig-31.
