Monogram Speedee Bilt B-25 Mitchell - Wood and Plastic Model Aircraft, H-1

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare early Monogram kit from the early 1950s. Fantastically well detailed and presented multi-media kit with 34 injection molded parts in clear, red, black and gray acetate and 57 die cut or shaped balsa parts including the famous Monofoil pre-formed wings. This example has never been started. The yellow, clear and red black plastic parts are still in the factory sealed red boxes. The other parts were never sealed and have been inventoried 100% complete with decals (in amazing 'near mint' condition), sand paper, plans and instruction book (both also in 'near mint' condition). It still has all of the correct internal packing as shown. Please note that this kit must be shipped insured. This is the first large-scale non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt model, the B-25 Mitchell. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. Monogram, however, wanted to make true scale models that could still be assembled easily. So they created the four large and highly detailed non-flying scale Speedee-Bilt bombers - the B-25, B-26, B-24 and B-17. The kits were a tremendous success and sold well in the early to mid 1950s.

Lindberg Lumber Schooner Forester, 852-60

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

As the West Coast lumber trade became big business in late 1800s, the industry needed a way to move vast amounts of timber. The answer was lumber schooners, built of the same Douglas fir as the planks they carried. These ships had shallow drafts for crossing coastal bars, uncluttered deck arrangements for ease of loading and were especially handy for maneuvering into the tiny, Northern California ports. The C.A. Thayer was one such schooner, built in 1895 and preserved today as a museum ship in San Francisco. This is the 1969 issue hardbox issue of this small but nicely detailed ship. It measures about 8 inches long when assembled and includes vacuformed sails. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The actual lumber schooner Forester was 217 feet long, 680 ton, 32 feet wide, drew 13.6 feet of water with a displacement of 1,812.5 tons. She cost $60,000 to build and netted between $12,000 and $19,000 per trip for her investors during the heyday of the trade. As of 2006 you could see see her wreckage along the Martinez shoreline.

Sold

Rare. Beautifully cast in high-definition resin with all fine recessed panel lines, cockpit, optional flying boat or landing gear configuration and full decals. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. This amphibious flying boat was produced in 1938 by the German aviation company Weser Flugzeugbau GmbH. The purpose was to test an improved wing design developed originally by the Rohrback firm in Berlin. The aircraft was a twin engine, all-metal transport with a cantilever high wing. Its wheels retracted into wells in its outrigger floats, vertically braced under the engines. Testing began in 1938 but the We 271 first flew as a landplane on June 26, 1939 and as a flying boat two days later. During the this first water flight, a critical design problem became obvious: waves cause by the hull and floats caused a large amount of water to strike the propellers, which disturbed the effective power and greatly shortened the the life of the props. Water deflectors will installed to a workable satisfaction. There is no agreement on the history after that point. One source reports that the We-271 then has between 60 and 70 flights and on May 1 1942 it was flowsn to a testing plant in Travemunde. Another reports that as early as spring of 1940 it was flown to the testing center at Rechlin but the next year it was shot down by a Spitfire and was scrapped later in the war.
