Dornier Do-X Flying Boat (ex-Otaki)
Good++   Injection Molded   old

From high quality Otaki molds. Famous German Flying Boat built in 1929. Dornier dreamed that this huge aircraft would become a trans-oceanic airliner with passengers traveling in oceanliner-like luxury. A tour of South and North America was conducted, but orders never materialized due to excessive fuel consumption and a lack of power. Total load was 170 passengers and crew, and the 12 engines developed 7200 HP. Kit has over 110 parts and a 13 inch wingspan. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

There are two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo. Some kits contain a Testors color painting guide also, but it is not specific to any model.

$38

Still factory sealed with the original header. Limited run Russian injection molded kit with brown and an injection molded clear canopy. There is little flash and fine raised and recessed detail. Please note that the kit did not come with decals and the instructions are inside the header. 'BI' stood for Blizhnii Istrebitel, which was 'close-range fighter' in Russian. Obviously, it also stood for the last names of the designers. The program was the Soviet Union's effort to produce a low cost rocket interceptor. The airplane flew and flew well, but it was plagued by engine issues, corrosion from nitric acid, and eventually tail flutter at high speeds that caused the loss of the most experienced test pilot, Grigory Yakovlevich Bakhchivandzhi. The early development started in 1938, with the first flights in 1940. The aircraft underwent a series of engine improvements and was still testing through 1945. The aircraft never entered series production. Bi-1 through BI-9 were built.
