1/16 #SF-97 Cleveland
![]() Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit Exc Wood old
| This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation. | |||

![]() Battlecruiser Dunkerque VG++ Injection Molded old
| Rare. The Dunkerque-class Battlecruisers were the French response to the German Graf Spee-class and the fast and well-armed Italian ships at the time. If the 1900 to 1930 span of French shipbuilding could be defined as lacking a clear vision or plan, the Strasbourg and her sister decisively ended that period. The products of superior design and engineering, the two sisters would re-define fast capital ships as would their near-sisters Battleships Richelieu and Jean Bart after them. But world events would conspire against these beautiful ships and there visibility in naval history. The Dunkerque was laid down on 24 Dec, 1932 at St. Nazire, launched on 2 Oct, 1935 and put into service on 15 Apr, 1937. Displacement was 26,500 ton and top speed was 30 knots. Main armament was (8) 330mm guns and (16) 130 mm dual purpose. The main and secondary guns were mounted in the first quadruple turrets. Both main 330 mm turrets faced forward and had almost unlimited arcs of fire - so that all main guns could fire when the enemy was sighted or in pursuit. Her superior speed would allow her to escape anything that she could not out-gun. Like most advanced ships of the day she featured the 'All-Or-Nothing' armor design or 'armored box'. The compact design and placement of the main and secondary armament allowed unusually high armor protection for a battlecruiser. Serious consideration was also given to underwater protection, and the ships had a unique and effective (as events would prove) anti-mine/torpedo system with a novel water-exclusive material. At Mers-El-Kebir, the Dunkerque was pinned at the pier. The British fired 15 inch shells, which the Dunkerque's deck armor was surprisingly resistant to. In an unlucky set of events, the auxiliary ship Terre Neuve moored next to her was sunk during the battle with a full load of depth-charges. Later, a torpedo set off the huge explosive cargo. The damage to Dunkerque was immense. She was hastily repaired and fled to Toulon, where she was joined by the hastily repaired Strasbourg. The French tried to repair Dunkerque as best they could but the wartime resources and material were very limited. However, when the Germans threatened to seize the ships, the entire fleet including the two sisters was scuttled in the harbor. The Italians raised the Strasbourg and stripped her of her guns; but she was bombed and sunk by Allied aircraft. In 1945 she was raised again, but salvage was beyond hope. In 1959 she was sold for scrap. Kit has never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. | |||

Fred Megow was a famous pioneer in the model aircraft field from the late 1920s and a very early manufacture for HO scale trains in the 1930s. His product lines of semi-prefabricated, solid and stick and tissue kits won him national and extensive world wide distribution - possibly the first modern model manufacture to achieve this. His fascinating story involves trying novel and untested marketing ideas in the Great Depression, followed my explosive world-wide growth. Mr. Megow was a true pioneer in the early days of modeling and a leader in the low price field so that every boy could afford a kit during those difficult times. Megow also produced scale operating train and trackside kits, ship models (large and small) and automotive subjects. Megow's catalogs claim that they were pioneers in HO scale, and there is documentation to support this fact. Megow's early HO train kits served not only to promote this now-popular scale nationally, but were among the very first train kits. Model train kits were responsible for the explosion in model railroad popularity in the late 1930s - please see the article in this website about these kits.
