In early 1946, USAAF issued requirement for a new attack bomber to succeed the Douglas A-26 Invader. The Martin Company entered the competition and won; the aircraft was given the designation XA-45. Soon later USAAF revised its requirement for better close-support bombing. Martin accepted the new requirement and received a contract for two prototypes; the project was redesignated XB-51. The first XB-51 made its 1st flight on Oct 1949 and became the fastest ground support bomber at that time. In 1950, with the outbreak of the Korean War, the USAF called for a new night intruder bomber. The XB-51 and English Electric Canberra entered in competition. The XB-51 was faster but the Canberra had much better endurance. After a fly-off in 1951, the Canberra was chosen as the winner. In 1952 the XB-51 project was canceled. Although Martin lost the XB-51 order, they received a license to produce the Canberra under designation B-57.

The Sparrowhawk aircraft hangar door is molded separately if you wish to super detail the hangar bay. The Macon and Akron carried their own complement of F9C Sparrowhawk fighter aircraft, which could take off from a large hook while the airship was in flight. Frog Airship R-100 - With Mooring Mast and Color Display Base, 1/500, F128

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Rare and excellent kit from the 1950s. Features a full-color, thick cardboard base, large Montreal Mooring Mast, detailed airship with clear engine pods & passenger gondola and more. The model includes a clever set of metal rods that allows the airship to be displayed 'floating' in mid-air from the mooring mast. The actual R-100 kits measures about 17 inches long. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The R-100 was built by a Vickers Subsidiary. The famous Barnes Wallis worked on her design, which lead to the innovative geodesic airframe used for the Wellington and two other aircraft. The R-100 made a successful Transatlantic flight. Although there were issues, the design was sound. However, the government-built R-101 was not as soundly engineered and crashed on her maiden voyage, forever bringing an end to the Airship in the British Isles. The R-100 was sold for scrap and R-102 was never built.
