![]() Highway Pioneers Foreign Car Gift Set - 1958 MG TD / 1907 Renault Limousine / 1911 Rolls Royce / 1913 Mercedes Torpedo / 1953 Jaguar XJ-120 / 1915 Fiat Tourer Good+ Injection Molded old
| Rare gift set dated 1953. This early piece still has the 'Another Gowland Creation' and balloon logo on the side. There is a factory-stamped alternate part number on one box side of 811-778 - possibly a Revell number. The cars are molded in the correct, colorful early acetate. There is very little acetate warping as the parts are excellent. The kits have not been started. Two cars are still factory sealed; the other have the bags present, but have split open like the 'krinkle' bags tended to do. These four have been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Highway Pioneers have a fascinating story. Before the 1950s “model building” as a hobby did not even make the top 10 list of boy’s activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland ‘Highway Pioneers’ car kits was a significant mover in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. They could be built in an hour after dinner and looked like the real car. The “Highway Pioneers” series helped lead to the production of other subjects in plastic. The effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, “model building” was the # 1 past time of American boys. | |||

![]() Chuck Wagon with Three Figures and Four Animals - Miniature Masterpieces Good++ Injection Molded old
| 1954 Pre - 'S' issue. Very nicely detailed kit of the classic Chuck Wagon. Features full suspension, rear shelves, back fold-down deck, coffee pot, pot, lamp, bell, accessories, two horses, calf, dog, two men and full suspension detail. Inside, the kit has not been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory 'crinkle' bag. The instructions are present and excellent. 'Miniature Masterpieces' was formed through an alliance of Lou Glasser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although the molds were made at Adams and it had the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. Originally there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit - without figures and horses, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954 and in that year and the next, kits were labeled 'Revell' with a 'Miniature Masterpiece' label on the box top also. 1954 advertisements from Revell list the complete line as the H506 State Coach of England, H510 Ranch Wagon, H503 Covered Wagon, H502 Marquis de Lafayette Carriage, H504 Roman Racing Chariot, H501 Wells Fargo Stage Coach, H509 Western Figures and H507 Chuck Wagon. | |||
