Hudson Miniatures 1914 Regal Lil Old Timers - Quickie Kit, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare. When the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' burst upon the hobby scene in 1951, they started a hobby revolution. Plastic model kits were not new in 1951, but successful marketing had never been done before. The sensation swept the country, and Gowland & Revell could not make the kits fast enough. The fact that the public was buying these models shocked the existing hobby establishment. One such manufacture was Hudson Miniatures. In the 1940s, Hudson had established a name in making 1/16 scale 'Old Timer' models of automobiles. These were excellent kits with wood and metal parts, but a high degree of skill was required to finish the wood parts. In the late 1940s, they added some injection molded plastic parts (usually acetate wheels and lamps) to the series but the rest of the kit remained wood. When Hudson saw what was happening with the Highway Pioneers, he began to design his own 1/32 scale line of all-plastic cars called 'Lil Old Timers', which hit the stores in 1954. An early paper fold-out catalog shows 18 models including some real gems like the 1910 International Harvester Passenger Car, 1911 Brush Delivery Truck and 1906 Columbia Electric Car just to name a few. The line was bought by Revell a short time after it's release, and Revell did reissue some (but not all) of the kits. As you would expect from Hudson, this is a nice kit with excellent moldings and detail for the time. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including instructions. The 1914 Regal Coupe is perhaps the rarest of all cars ever built in America. It was underslung, which was rare for the time, and the body was all wood and similar to old horse-drawn carriages of colonial times. The design was sometimes called a Colonial Coupe. The large car seated only two people and could hit 40 mph with it's 25 hp engine.

Hudson Miniatures 1913 Mercer Raceabout Lil Old Timers - Quickie Kit, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Rare. Never started and all parts are still in the factory sealed bag; includes instructions. These kits have a very interesting history. When the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' burst upon the hobby scene in 1951, they started a hobby revolution. Plastic model kits were not new in 1951, but successful mass marketing of plastic kits was new. The sensation swept the country, and Gowland & Revell could not make the kits fast enough. The fact that the public was buying these models shocked the successful hobby establishment. One such manufacture was Hudson Miniatures. In the 1940s, Hudson had established a name in making 1/16 scale 'Old Timer' models of automobiles. These were excellent kits with wood and metal parts, but a high degree of skill was required to carve and finish the wood parts. In the late 1940s, they added some injection molded plastic parts (usually acetate wheels) to the series but did not consider a completely plastic kit. When Hudson saw what was happening with the Highway Pioneers, he began to design his own 1/32 scale line called 'Lil Old Timers', which hit the stores in 1954. The Mercer was perhaps the most famous sports car of it's day, and it can be successfully argued that it was America's first sports car. The 30 horsepower 'T' head 4 cylinder engine sped it along at over 80 miles per hour. A 1914 Mercer clocked 112 mph at Daytona Beach - no mean feat for that age.

Hudson Miniatures 1903 Ford A Model With Working Brass Lanterns, 1/16

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Includes 'Made In Japan for Aristocraft 'Old Time Auto Headlights 1-12 volts brass. These lanterns are beautiful and they used the original Hudson plastic parts as a pattern as they are identical in every way, except these are brass and include operating lights. Never used and still factory sealed inside with instructions. The actual kit is dated 1949 and very highly detailed for that time. Features numerous die-cut, machined and cut wood parts, beautiful plastic wheels, lights, steering wheel, horn and other accessories, metal parts and die cut cardstock. Although all of Hudson's 1/16 kits have excellent detail, this one has even more detail than usual thanks to Hudson's engineers having access to the actual car. This kit has never been started. The small parts are still in the internally sealed factory bag and the other parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete with all parts and plans/instructions. This car was one of the first Ford Automobiles and the first 'A' model. It sold for $900 in 1903. Hudson Miniatures created a very popular line of automobile kits in a constant 1/16 scale shortly after WWII. The kits sold very well...so well that you could argue that Gowland & Gowland borrowed Hudson's subject matter for their ground-breaking 'Highway Pioneers.' The Hudson Miniatures 'Old Timers' even spawned a line of imitators, with Fador's 'Smallster' being one of the better in quality. Sales did drop on the appearance and popularity of the much smaller (and less accurate) Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951. When the all-injection molded Gowland kits proved not to be a passing fad, Hudson quickly planned and released his own all-plastic, small-scale competition called 'Lil' Old Timers Quickie Kits.' The kits were of excellent quality, but it was too little too late. Additionally, sales of the excellent wooden kits faltered further in the next few years with the introduction of accurate, 1/24 and 1/32 all-plastic cars in the mid 1950s. This forced Hudson to discontinue the wood kits and the plastic line was sold to Revell and subsequently re-released. Today, these excellent, big 1/16 kits are often the only model available of these early automobiles. In the mid 1960s Aurora thought so highly of Hudson Miniatures that they purchased the wood kit assets and released a very small number of these in all-plastic models.

Berkeley Buccaneer B Special - For R/C or Free Flight

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

Sold

Early free flight gas model design. Wingspan measures 56 inches. Early gas flight was a true art form - the demands on the aircraft design were unique. First, the aircraft had to take off under power, climb rapidly and stay in the contest area. Secondly, when the motor shut down, the model had to glide like a glider and hopefully still stay in the contest area. These contradictions in aircraft performance lead to some amazing designs. One persistent issue was spins - this Buccaneer 'B' Special features slotted leading edges to prevent 'whip stalls', which was a very common problem at the time. It also has a tail design that "...arrests spins". Model features ready made landing gear, complete full size plans, plywood firewall, semi-finished wood blocks, rubber wheels, plastic windshield, silkspan covering and printed wooden parts. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Makes and idea conversion to electric and RC - these are light aircraft, so you simply climb to altitude, shut down the motor and glide. Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Molded in black and clear. The kit has never been started. The parts have been inventoried complete and includes decals and instructions. The Dam Busters squadron was famous for its daring raids on three German dams on May 16, 1943. Carrying the special Barnes Wallis-designed bombs, the Lancasters flew very low over the water in the face of heavy flak to drop the rotating bombs perfectly. Many did not return. The bombs did perform as promised, first skipping over the water, hitting the dam, then rolling down 30 feet before exploding with tremendous force. In an airburst, these bombs would not have damaged the dams, but since water is incompressible, the dams were breached.
