![]() Toshi Matsudo's Zero - 42 inch Wingspan Free Flight Gas Model Airplane VG++ Wood old
| Classic award-winning design from the 1950s. Big 42 inch wingspan, total weight with engine 6 to 6.5 ounces. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals (if originally included). Designed for 'Sniffing Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and early gas powered models, all powered by Brown engines, took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all without any operator inputs once the airplane took off. Getting the wing up out of the propeller airflow was a huge improvement, and this type of design proliferated. This is one example of a parasol style 1950s free-flight competition aircraft. | |||

1/16 #SF-125 Cleveland
![]() North American B-25 Mitchell Medium Bomber - 55 inch Wingspan Flying Model Airplane (for RC or Free Flight) VG- Wood old
| This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. This results in a very large 55 inch wingspan model. This B-25 can be built to reproduce any particular version of this famous bomber. Designed for free flight, but can be converted to Radio Control (RC). The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. NOTE: the liquids are missing from this kit (dope and glue). There were either removed, or this was a wartime kit and the liquids were not included from the factory. Complete with all other parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation. | |||

#SP-1 Carl Goldberg Models
![]() Gentle Lady 2-Meter RC Sailplane Exc Wood old
| This 78 and 1/4 inch wingspan glider is legendary for it's performance and still flown today. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals (if originally included). NOTE: this kit was factory packed in a rugged and sturdy box. The model will be shipped with this box only (no external box) unless you request otherwise. Carl Goldberg was a gifted designer of model aircraft, and his career spanned the evolution of flying models. His designs and number of titles won in competition at the Nationals is legendary. His first competition was the 1928 Nationals, where he received honorable mention. By 1934 he won the indoor Nats and in 1935 he opened a Hobby Shop, among the first in the nation (the first one was probably opened by Cleveland Models Ed Packard). Awards came quickly. He wrote articles for Model Airplane News, and was Comet's top designer from 1939 till 1945. After Comet, he worked with Mike Schlesinger and Sid Axelrod on what eventually became Top-Flite Models. In 1955 he founded Carl Goldberg Models and released a still-popular line of scale, rubber, gas, glider and RC models. Needless to say, Goldberg's models are of the highest quality. | |||

1/28 #D-9 Unknown
![]() Berliner-Joyce XFJ-2 Wooden Aircraft Kit Good+ Wood old
| Very rare 1930s large scale solid kit from an unknown kit manufacture. The kit number is D-9. The Berliner-Joyce XFJ-2 was the original XFJ with a cowling, Townend ring and a 500-hp R-1340-92 Wasp engine. Performance was very good, but ground handling was less than optimal. The Navy did reconsider the XFJ but decided on other aircraft instead. The aircraft was flown for a few years for various tests and scrapped. Evidently only one was ever made. The kit has minor assembly - the original owner began to rough out the fuselage in profile. The quality of work is good. There is no other assembly and the kit is complete with all wooden parts, fuselage templates, full size plans (very near 1/32 scale), original corked glass vials for glue and paint, turned wood wheels and bamboo. | |||
Megow
![]() Luscombe Phantom 8 inch Wingspan Balsa Solid Airplane Model VG+++ Wood old
| Rare solid model from the 1930s. Don Luscombe was a designer for Monocoupe, where he made an excellent name for himself. This Megow kit is part of the constant 8 inch wingspan series of model. It includes balsa for the fuselage, printed balsa for all other parts, turned wheels, bamboo, silver paint in a cork-sealed glass vial and scale drawings (including insignia) with instructions. The kit has not been started and is complete. | |||

It was the first such aircraft to be certified by the Department of Commerce, Bureau of Aeronautics. The aircraft created an audience of pilots that did not previously exist - private individuals. For the first time, they had an affordable, easy to fly and safe aircraft. They were produced from 1929 through 1932 and sold for just under $1300. Kit is near 1/32 scale. Contains excellent full-size plans, balsa wood for fuselage and wings, printed balsa for all other parts, original yellow and red glass paint vials with cork seals, turned wheels, cast metal prop, insignia, sandpaper and celluloid. Ideal Aeroplane & Supply
![]() Boeing Fighter (F4B-4) - Midget Craft 6 inch wingspan Solid Balsa Airplane Model VG Wood old
| Very old 1932 issue from Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Company. Ideal was one of the first US model airplane producers, starting their business in 1911. During the early years of the Great Depression, Ideal switched to balsa wood and soon released a line of 'Six Inch Wingspread' solid scale models in a line called 'Ideal Midget-Craft'. Adds for this line can be seen in Model Airplane News and other major popular aircraft publications of the 1930s. The models included plans and the required wood and usually retailed for about 10 cents. This aircraft has been started, which in this case is good news. The fuselage from Ideal was simply wooden stock. The original builder has carved the fuselage very accurately and correctly to about 90% finished. No other work has been done and no other parts have been cut out of the printwood. The model is complete and would be easy to finish. | |||

In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.
