Dime Scale Flight
![]() Comet's Boeing P-26 Peashooter - 16 inch Wingspan Dime Scale Flying Airplane NM Wood old
| Scale Flight Model Company in Bloomington, Indiana, USA was dedicated to releasing authentic reproductions of the finest "Dime Scale" flying model (stick and tissue) kits from the 1930s/40s. Dime Scale models used to sell for a dime in the 1930's, hence the name. They are actually box scale, but as a general guideline, they usually had a wingspan of 16 inches and have simple and light construction. "Dime Scale" models are now a class flown in some competitions. Kit consists of contest grade printwood, contest quality strip wood, machine cut balsa propeller, the best Japanese tissue, wooden wheels, competition bushed nose plug, brass thrust washers, prop shaft, prop freewheeler, FAI rubber strip motor and a copy of a genuine dime scale plan that was used in the 1930s-1940s. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. | |||
#G6-100 Monogram
![]() Speedee-Bilt Long Midget or Midget Mustang Flying Scale Model Exc++ Wood old
| Formerly released as the Midget Mustang. Scale flying rubber powered wooden model. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufactures sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufactures launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. | |||

![]() Little Air Force Assortment Gift Set - Speedee-Bilt F-51 (P-51) / F6F and Superkit F-51 and F-84 NM Wood_Plastic old
| Very rare 1950s "pre-injection molded" gift set. Long before injection molded kit were made in the USA, Monogram produced perhaps the finest pre-fabricated wooden kits with plastic details. The Speedee-Bilt series were flying models with pre-painted and cut wooden parts with plastic props, cowls, pilots, etc. The Superkits were smaller static models with precarved wooden parts and many plastic details. The kits themselves are rare today, but the gift set is very rare. Monogram issued very few gift sets for injection kits, and even fewer in the early 1950s for the wooden kits. The gift set consists of a special 'Christmas' box with a tray and lift-off top with a cello window. This one contains 2 Superkits (F-84 Thunderjet and F-51 Mustang) and 2 Speedee-Bilts (the F6F Hellcat and F-51 Mustang). The outer box is near mint and in investment grade condition - which is amazing considering the age of the set. Even the original cut-out add for MonoDope and MonoGlue is present. The four kits are in mint boxes and have never started. Each is 100% inventoried complete with all parts/decals and instructions present. | |||

| Late 50s early 60s stick and tissue flying model. 24 inch wingspan. Never started and complete with all parts and plans. Missing decals. Includes extra parts from another S4C kit also. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufactures, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2011. | |||

![]() Boeing B-29 Superfortress 25.5 inch Wing Span Solid Model NM++ Wood old
| In the 1930s and 1940s, most modelers built the flying stick and tissue type models with rubber, co2 or gas power. But there were a small but measurable percent that built solid aircraft display models of great detail. This required great skill worth of the shipbuilders of old, especially considering the limited offerings. Many manufactures issued blocks of wood and a plan - the famous (or infamous) 'Make Wood Look Like Plane' kits. A few manufactures made expensive super detailed kits with metal accessories (like Dyna-Products). Comet came in the middle and struck a nice balance of detail and cost. 1944 issue in investment grade condition. The box is factory new. Inside, the kit has never been started and is 100% complete with all wooden parts, clear plastic blisters, black plastic wheels, decals (like new!), sandpaper, full plans, glue and a glass bottle of dope or sanding sealer. All original packing dividers and tissue is mint also. | |||
