On November 15, 1577, Sir Francis Drake sailed from Plymouth, England in the 'Golden Hind,' accompanied by four smaller vessels. At the time, the great nations of Europe were squabbling for a share of the treasures to be found in the New World. Because Drake intended to visit land already claimed by Spain and Portugal, he was reported to be on a long voyage of discovery. The voyage lasted almost three years and his small ship completely circled the globe before returning to England. When she returned, the 'Golden Hind' was loaded with ingot and jewels plundered from the rich Spanish settlements along the West coast of South America.
