On the 28th of September, 1936, the Bristol 138/A climbed to an altitude of 49,967 feet to establish a new world altitude record. In 1937 it climbed to 53,967 feet where the windscreen cracked. The pilot was saved by the pressure suit he was wearing. Never started.
