1/48   33-89   Aurora   Lockheed F-90 - West Hempstead Issue
Exc+   Injection Molded   old

Very, very early West Hempstead F-90 molded in Brooklyn gray. When Aurora issued it's first two plastic kits, they were copies of the Hawk Model Company's F9F and F-90 fighters. The first Aurora issue was in the rather plain and very rare flip-top one-piece box with the kit molded in gray with no landing gear and missiles from the Brooklyn factory. The second issue was also from Brooklyn and molded in gray with no landing gear or missiles but was in the new two-piece hardbox. The third official issue is the West Hempstead issue and is molded in silver with landing gear and missiles. But this is where it gets interesting. Aurora ran a tight ship and was famous for letting nothing go to waste. If there were extra boxes laying around after the new issue came out, there were used. The same went for old stands, old decals and even old injection molded kits. This gives the collector some very interesting scenarios. This kit is one of those. This is a Brooklyn 'Famous Fighters' box for the F-90. However, under the original tissue paper is a GRAY molded West Hempstead issue with landing gear and missiles- a case of using up the old plastic after doing a mold change. Plastic was delivered by rail car and stored in silos - a silo could last a long time and feed several mold machines. The decals are old Brooklyn with the correct large TATEM COMPANY script on the back. The stand is the large, clear rectangular Booklyn two-piece version, but during the mold modifications, Aurora machined the 'Brooklyn' markings from the mold and of course the stand. The instructions are the modified Brooklyn- they show the landing gear and missiles but with 'West Hempstead' under the old logo. An interesting piece for the advanced collector. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
