The fascinating history of this ship is told by Commander Edward P. Stafford, USN, in his legendary book "The Big E - The Story of the USS Enterprise."

In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.

1950s one-piece 'flip top' box issue. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood, preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are quality hardwood (not balsa) and are smooth precarved to final shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them. When complete it makes an impressive desk top display. Features original glue and sandpaper, clear plastic canopy, special Strombecker 'teardrop' display stand and extensive full color decals. Never started. 100% complete with all parts, decals and detailed plans, instructions. Please NOTE that the box displays better than the 'good-' grade; it is graded as such due to closed corner tears and a 1.5 x 1 missing litho section on the box back.

Skywave IJN Special Cargo Ship Kashino, 1/700, W160

This very unique special-purpose Japanese ship was designed to transport the giant 46mm main gun turrets of the Yamato Class Battleship. The guns were produced only at the Kure Naval Arsenal while other shipyards built the actual battleships. The Kashino was projected with the three battleships and was completed in July of 1940. The most interesting features of Kashino were three huge holds which enabled her to carry two sets of super-heavy 46cm triple guns a once; one set weighed as much as a modern destroyer. The design was very successful, and after the Shinano was canceled as a battleship, Kishino carried cargo to war bases. In September of 1942 she was torpedoed and sunk by USS Growler west of Okinawa. This model does include turrets and gun to display on and in the special holds, or you can display it without them in normal cargo configuration. Never started.
