Monogram A-7 Corsair II - VA-72 USS Kennedy, 1/48, 5418

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG+

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1979 issue "White Box" issue that is a high quality kit featuring full cockpit, wheel well detail, optional position canopy and a large load of external stores with drop tanks, AIM-9 Sidewinders and iron bombs. Decals for VA-72 USS John F Kennedy. This kit has a very interesting history. Aurora originally cut the molds just a few years before they shut down. The A-7 was an excellent kit for that time as Aurora did everything they could to make it so. It features all recessed panel lines, realistic retractable landing gear with opening and closing doors, rotating wheels, good cockpit and a huge loadout of iron bombs, Sidewinder missiles and drop tanks. The molds were sold in 1977 to Monogram, and the A-7 molds survived the train accident on the way to Chicago. Monogram only reissued the finest Aurora kits; however, to meet Monogram standards, they often received significant upgrades, like the 737, DC-10 and 747 did. However, the A-7 upgrade was so extensive that it is a challenge to tell if it came from Aurora or not. For years I read that it did, but the differences are so significant that I wanted to compare them side-by-side. I finally got that chance. My conclusion is that this certainly is the old Aurora kit, but it has been modified so extensively that it may be the largest, most comprehensive mold rework ever done in the history of plastic modeling. First, it is from the Aurora molds because of the identical parts tree layout for the trees and parts that Monogram did keep - down to the millimeter, right down to the part number tabs. Also, the dimensions of the wings, horizontal stabs and most other major parts are identical along with many other smaller clues. But the amazing things are the changes. This is not a complete list, but Monogram did the following- on the fuselage halves they made the nose slightly longer (2MM) and wider; added the cockpit cowl, moved the front landing gear bay forward by 5mm, added the main wheel bays to the fuselage parts and removed all surface detail, replacing it with fine raised details. Antennas and lights were modified or added, as well as refueling probe storage. The wings were lengthened by 2mm each; while the recessed lower control surface lines were replace, the rest of the surface detail was redone complete. The horizontal stabilizers were reworked for surface detail and in doing so, they removed the reinforcement plates at the hinges; you can still see the tooling marks from this removal. The retractable landing gear was eliminated. The main gear struts were simply given strut detail, while the nose strut is almost completely new. The landing gear doors were almost left intact, but the tabs (for retraction) were removed and interior detail was added. The cockpit is completely new. The bomb loadout and ejector racks are almost the same, but the racks received new surface detail. The AIM-9s are almost completely Aurora - all Monogram did was remove the mounting tab. You can still see the original ejector pin marks, tree layout and even the same part number tab. There are many more changes, but this gives you a good idea of the trouble that Monogram went to in making accurate models.

Bluejacket NS Savannah - 37.5 Inch Long Wood And Metal Ship Model, 1/192

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very rare and the larges, most detailed kit ever made of this stunning ship. Museum quality craftsman model in large scale. Features hardwood, kiln-dried, factory-carved hull, hardwood factory-carved superstructure, extensive high quality cast Britannia fittings and other hardwood and metal parts as required. Includes very detailed full size plans and text instruction booklet. The kit has never been started. The fittings are all still in the factory sealed bags. The parts that were never factory sealed (hull, wood and metal stock) have been inventoried complete. Includes all paperwork. NS Savannah was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. She launched on July 21, 1959. The total cost was $46.9 million which including a $28.3 million nuclear fuel reactor. Funding was from United States government agencies. Savannah was a demonstration project for the potential use of peaceful nuclear energy. The ship was named after the first steamship to cross the Atlantic ocean, the SS Savannah. She was in service between 1962 and 1972 as one of only four nuclear-powered cargo ships ever built. Savannah was deactivated in 1971 and after several moves has been moored at Pier 13 of the Canton Marine Terminal in Baltimore, Maryland, since 2008. Fortunately, she is being restored as a museum ship and some tours are available with special arrangements. I was fortunate enough to tour the ship when she was docked at Patriots Point, South Carolina back in the early 1990s. Much of the interior was in such poor condition that the museum had locked or disabled all doors leading into the ship so that visitors were restricted to the outside only. Leaving portholes open to staterooms and general lack of funds to keep the ship lead to the neglect.

Aurora McDonnell F-4H Phantom, 1/48, 394-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Early release hardbox dated 1961. Please note this kit is from the middle 1960s as it has the oval sunburst logo with no 'Famous Fighters' border. Large 1/48 scale early Phantom has great Jo Kotula box artwork and is a nicely detailed kit for that time featuring dual cockpits, full landing gear, four AIM-7 Sparrow missiles, a tiny additional F-4H scale model (measuring only 1.5 inches long) and a large, clear 'Triangle World' display stand. Never started. It has been inventoried and NOTE: missing one piece: pilot's control stick. Otherwise includes all other parts, decals and instructions. In the photo the box displays better than the 'good' rating but note that it has a long crease and edge dings along the bottom, clear tape on the center of both long sides and a closed litho tear on the lower long side as well as general wear.

Aurora Sikorsky HH-3E Jolly Green Giant, 1/72, 505

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair

Sold

'Big A' logo issue dated 1972. In the late 1960s/early 1970s, Aurora realized that it needed to produce new and better kits if they were to stay competitive. As a result, several helicopters, aircraft and ships were released with markedly improved mold quality and detail. The HH-3 is one of those kits. The result is a very nice scale model that features full cockpit, pilot and co-pilot figures, stub wing fuel tanks, detailed rescue winch, in-flight refueling probe, retractable landing gear, rotating main and tail rotors and more. The kit has never been started. Inventoried and NOTE: Missing two parts: pilot's arm and front left clear windshield. Otherwise complete will all other parts and includes decals and instructions.

Aurora Convair B-58 Hustler, 1/76, 375

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

1972 'Big A' issue of the largest scale Hustler released by Aurora. (The other two are 1/96 and the ex-Comet 1/175). The colorful and dramatic box art is from an unknown artist. Molded in silver, clear and with a large black 'Tripod' stand. The kit has never been started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing one tiny part, (1) landing light. Easily made. Otherwise complete with all other parts, decals and instructions present.

Aurora Hiller X-18 Convertiplane, 1/70, 146-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair-

Sold

Rare ex-Comet kit and the first Aurora issue as evidenced by the 98 cent price extension. When Aurora bought the Comet molds in 1963, they released this kit for the next few years but never again. Features recessed panel detail, spinning counter-rotating props and tilting wing. The aircraft is considered the 'Grandfather of the V-22 Ospry'. Never started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing one piece, nose strut. Otherwise includes all other parts, decals and instructions. NOTE: the box would grade better, but there are 50 or 60 small holes poked through from the back of the box top. They don't show up well in the photo but you can certain see them in person; hence the low box grade of 'Fair-'.

Monogram USS Saratoga CV-60 Aircraft Carrier - (ex Aurora), 1/600, 3505

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Dated 1978. When Monogram purchased the Aurora molds, they only modified and reissued the best ones; and the Saratoga was in that group. This large model measures 21 inches long when assembled and has a full hull with four propellers and rudder, detailed islands, separately molded AA armament and gun directors and more. The modification the Monogram made was to cut completely new molds for a beautiful and extensive airwing of (12) F-4 Phantoms, (9) A-4 Skyhawks, (6) Vigilantes, (3) Trackers and (3) helicopter with separately molded blades. NOTE: this kit has very minor and 'professional' quality assembly to two pieces: the dual elevator framework is glued to the hull. There is no other assembly and zero painting. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts present and includes decals and instructions.
