J Roberts AU-1 (F4U) Corsair - 34 Inch Wingspan Flying Model, 1/14, JRS-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Rare J. Roberts 'Flight Control' Model Mfg. Co. kit from Baker, Oregon. This is a fascinating and well designed kit with a very large degree of prefabrication. There is no fabric covering - everything is covered with wood. The engineering is fascinating. For example, the wooden fuselage skins are in two parts (left and right) and are 100% formed, cut and shaped single sheets. The gull wing panels for the wing are fully shaped and cut, and the leading edge wing spar is fully shaped from balsa. The rudder and elevator are completely precut, as are numerous other parts that are fully shaped. Also features a spun aluminum cowl, clear vacuformed canopy (still in mint condition with no yellowing), shaped leading and trailing edges of balsa and hardwood, die-cut balsa parts, wire control linkage, full size plans and more. The kit has never been started. Inventoried with all aircraft pieces and plans present. NOTE: missing decals. J. Roberts line creator was J. Robert Smurthwaite. Bob Smurthwaite was a life-long Control Line flier and competitor who originated the three-line throttle controlling hardware, which was a matched set of a bellcrank for three lines and matching three-line handle. He created and sold several iconic kits, like the Martin AM-1 Mauler, designed for Control Line's Navy Carrier Event. His kits set a very high standard for the industry and are considered second only to the Lou Proctor line (which are considered museum grade). In the early 1990s Bob Smurthwaite closed the factory down. He passed away in 1992.

Revell Campbeltown Destroyer - (USS Buchanan) Destroyer, 1/240, H450

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1971 issue of this large-scale and detailed kit of the historic four-pipe destroyer. Originally the USS Buchanan Four-Piper, she was traded in the famous Lend-Lease program for the use of British bases. On March 8, 1942, the Campbeltown sailed up the Loire River. Her mission was to destroy the Normandie Drydock, a possible haven for the Tirpitz which was holed up on Norway at this time. The Campbeltown was disguised as a German warship and the bow was packed with 8500 lbs of high explosive depth charges. Under a RAF diversion, Campbeltown fought her way up the river and rammed the dock doors at full speed. Charges at the stern sank the back of the ship and she was wedged in the dock. During a German inspection 8 hours later, the charges went off, scattering parts of the ship up to one mile away. The dock was rendered useless to the Tirpitz, who now had to stay in Norway.

His product lines of semi-prefabricated, solid and stick and tissue kits won him national and extensive world wide distribution - possibly the first modern model manufacture to achieve this. His fascinating story involves trying novel and untested marketing ideas in the Great Depression, followed my explosive world-wide growth. Mr. Megow was a true pioneer in the early days of modeling and a leader in the low price field so that every boy could afford a kit during those difficult times. Megow also produced scale operating train and trackside kits, ship models (large and small) and automotive subjects. Megow's catalogs claim that they were pioneers in HO scale, and there is documentation to support this fact. Megow's early HO train kits served not only to promote this now-popular scale nationally, but were among the very first train kits. Model train kits were responsible for the explosion in model railroad popularity in the late 1930s - please see the article in this website about these kits.

Inside, the kit is correct with all cardboard dividers. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Starting the 1910 and '20s, many dedicated modelers began building flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. The availability of wooden model kits expanded rapidly after Lindberg's flight due to the nation-wide 'Aviation Craze.' However, it was widely reported by hobby publications that because of the high degree of skill required in building wooden aircraft that less than 80% of the kits purchased were successfully completed (and far fewer flown). That changed in the early 1950s with the introduction of plastics and injection molding machinery. The phenomenon of the all-plastic Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, since the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car - and had zero carving or painting required. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and adult males as well!
