Guillows Spitfire - Flying Aircraft Model, 50-10

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$22

Rare stick-and-tissue model dated 1954. This was part of Guillow's extensive '50' line of models with wingspans between 16 and 24 inches. These were very advanced kit for their day, featuring all die-cut balsa parts, stripwood and spars, plastic cowl and wheels, , completely finished wheels and thrust button, plastic prop, metal prop shaft, covering tissue and superb plans with numerous construction details. Never started. NOTE: missing canopy. Otherwise inventoried with all other parts and plans. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Beautiful resin kit with all fine recessed panel lines, detailed cockpit, two vacuform canopies, separately molded elevator and rudder control surfaces, detailed gear wells, drop tanks and full decals. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The famous 1948 Thunderceptor was a very advanced design, but hybrid jet and rocket engine system created problems, among other things. When newer, cheaper all-weather designs such as the Convair F-102 became available, the test flying program slowed down and the USAF lost interest. Republic's response was this aircraft, a modified XF-91 with a radar nose, designated XF-91B All-Weather Fighters. This was the second prototype, and it was eventually destroyed. But the original XF-91 is preserved at the USAF Museum in Dayton, Ohio.

A turbo-supercharger was installed, and this aircraft achieved an impressive 340 mph at 20,000 feet in 1937. However, it suffered from frequent turbo-supercharger failures. An order for 13 service aircraft followed on December 11, 1937. The first service models delivered between April 29 1939 and December 5, 1939 were designated YP-37. All aircraft suffered from mechanical problems, and the US Army Air Force discontinued all further development.
