Hawk Supermarine S.6B (S-6B S6B) Acetate 1948 One Piece Box Issue, 1/48, 700

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$175

For the advanced model collector. This is the first issue in acetate from 1948. It has a fascinating history for it is among the early injection molded kits produced in the United States (please see the article about early USA kit production on this website). The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood with metal accessories since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the then-large sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by replacing the metal detail parts with injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This may have been the first injection molded airplane kit produced in the USA; another contender is the Varney's PT-17. Both met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly added two-color art work to the Curtiss box and molded the kit in bright yellow acetate. In 1947, Hawk approached toy stores since hobby shops were giving the kit poor promotion. The toy stores did much better. Spurred on by toy store sales in 1947, Hawk added four classic racers in 1948, all molded in acetate - the Gee Bee, Howard Ike, Laird Solution and the Supermarine S6B. This kit is the one of the early acetate examples from 1948. (Hawk made the switch to polystyrene in 1949.) The acetate is a high-gloss medium gray and has very little warping. With a little pressure, all parts fit together perfectly. This is very unusual as acetate usually warps badly. The kit has never been started. The small parts are still factory sealed in the clear 'krinkle' bag and the big parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete. The instructions are in 'near mint' condition and are the rare, original first issue with text only and no illustrations. One side of the box is 'excellent' (as shown) and the other side is only 'good.' - hence the overall 'good++' grade. All end flaps are present and attached. There is tape on both end flaps and a tape tear on one. The box has not been crushed, bent or flattened, which is unusual, as the one-piece boxes were not very strong. Please note that Hawk did not issue decals or a clear windscreen with the first issue of this kit.

ITC Stinson Model T Tri-Motor - Eastern Air Service, 1/61, 3722

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$149

Rare. This famous early 1930s transport was the primary competition of the Ford Tri-Motor and saw widespread use. It was the idea of E.L. Cord, the money behind the aircraft and the owner of the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg automobile company. Cord also owned Lycoming, the engines that ended up on the final product. Another of Cord's companies was Century Airlines, which naturally used the aircraft. Century later became part of American Airlines. The Model T was used by many other airlines including Eastern, Delta, Braniff, TWA, United and American when they rolled up Century. The Tri-Motor carried 10 passengers, baggage and of course the mail, which was critical to early airline revenue. The aircraft proved successful and economical to operate. Includes clear windows, interior with passengers and pilots, Eastern Air Service decals and clear blue-tinted display stand. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The clear parts and decals are still in the factory sealed bag.

Aurora Lockheed F-90 Fighter, 1/48, 33-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

$149

The box is in amazing 'near mint' condition with as-new color and gloss, four solid corners, no tape or tape marks, no price tags and no tears. The only flaw is very light corner and edge wear. Hardbox is dated 1958, but the logo tells us that this is a very late 1950 to early 1960s issue since the 'Famous Fighters' is not present in the oval logo but the sunburst still is. This issue has the correct triangle two-piece clear base as well as full landing gear and rockets. Molded in silver and clear. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts decals and instructions. This is reissue of one of Aurora's first two kits (F-90 and F9F) which were copies of the Hawk molds.
