Revell Mickey Thompson's Challenger I and Tommy Ivo Showboat Four Engine Dragster, 1/25, 7501

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

1987 issue features both kits from the original 1960s molds. The Challenger I was originally released in 1962 and it was a revolutionary kit that broke new ground in 1/25 level of detail. In Tom Graham's interviews with Jim Keeler, the kit designer, the molds cost $80,000 in 1961 - twice that of a normal car kit. To design the kit, Thompson's mechanics gave the Revell team full run of the vehicle and even disassembled it for them. The kit features removable boy panels, four super detailed Pontiac V-8 engines with 18 parts each, complete chassis, suspension and drive train detail, water tanks, fuel tanks, parachute holder, cockpit and much more. The level of detail is astounding. Molded in correct baby blue, chrome plated and with rubber tires. The Showboat certainly fit the name - it had four Buick Nailhead engines with individual gear boxes. That kit is very well detailed as well. Both are never started. All the colored parts are still factory sealed in the bag. The few parts not sealed have been inventoried complete. With decals and instructions.

Revell Convair 990 Coronado Luxury Jet Airliner Swissair, 1/135, H254-129

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Rare hardbox first issue dated 1961. Very nice kit of the fantastic Mach .91 airliner from the early 1960s. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. It is interesting to note that Revell still included the 'S' clear swivel stand with this kit in 1961. Use of this stand had long been discontinued in the reissued 'S' kits. The Convair 990 and its near sister 880 were very high performance airliners. Unfortunately they did not find favor with commercial operators. The commercial failure of the 990 caused Revell (and Aurora) to pull these molds from production shortly after the introduction of the kit. The 990 was a larger and faster (Mach .91) airliner than the 880, but it failed to meet it's range criteria for east to west crossings of the USA. As a result, only 37 were made. Interestingly enough, several 990s continued to be operated by private owners and NASA operated two for decades after the last one was phased out of commercial service. Only 65 880s were produced from 1959 to 1962. The aircraft was designed to be smaller and faster than the DC-8 and 707 - this market did not develop, however, and if it did it could have been served with less expensive designs.

Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Revenue Cutter - 12 Inches Long, 1110

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

The plans are dated 1938. This kit is part of Ideal's famous '12 Inch' series of ship models with the composition molded hull. This eliminated all the work of forming the hull from a block of wood. This hull is in 'near mint' condition with no warping and no damaged, just a few tiny edge chips at the top hull line. Also includes two sheets of printwood parts, bamboo strips, wooden dowels, full plans/instructions which include rigging details. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes the plans/instructions. The box is generally very nice but is missing the large flap on the left side. The parts are still wrapped in the plans exactly as they left the factory; the plans do have a little wear, mainly in the corners and are in 'very good' condition.
