Cleveland Wedell's 1933 Wedell-Williams Racer - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-47
Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc,   old
$135

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG-,   old
$22

Very finely molded in silver. Features separately molded ailerons, elevators and rudder. This kit has never been started. NOTE: missing one strut brace which can be made from scratch. Otherwise inventoried with all parts, decals and instructions. Box art is by the famous Jo Kotula who did 1930s covers for the magazine 'Model Airplane News' and later the Aurora box art of the late 1950s. Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back. There are one or two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo. Some kits contain a Testors color painting guide also, but it is not specific to any model.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+++,   old

Still factory sealed. 1976 issue. This kit is important because Revell was thoughtful enough to alter the venerable PT-17 molds to make a real Super Stearman. Includes new cowling/engine, scoops as required and more. This may be the only issue of the Super Stearman in this scale. Revell issued three of these 'Airshow' style kits in this year H664, H665 and H666. Each contained two aircraft and a color diorama base, backdrop and special stand. If you have all three kits, the three bases fit together to make a large Air Show diorama with all six aircraft.

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Poor,   old
$29

1940s flying model kit from the Golden Age of model aviation. Kit consists of stick and tissue construction and is intended to be rubber powered. Includes printwood sheets, strip wood in two sizes, completely carved main gear wheels, rough-cut balsa prop, balsa blocks, tissue, clear canopy material and metal stock for the landing gear and hardware. NOTE: one rib has been cut from the printwood sheet. No other parts have been cut out. Quality of the cut is excellent. There is no assembly. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. NOTE: box is missing one set of end panels (inner and out flaps). The rest is there, but it suffers from age damaged, hence the 'poor' grade. The plans/instructions also suffer from age and have numerous cracks and splits. They are 95% complete, but many small chips are missing. They are certainly complete enough to build the kit.
