Flaws include light to moderate general wear, hence the grade of only 'excellent.' This was a nicely molded and detailed kit for that time. Revell F9F-8 Cougar Pre 'S' Kit - (F9F8), 1/52, H212-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

1954 Pre-S issue of this kit. It features the fantastic box art that made these kits so famous, all parts molded in gloss dark blue and the famous Revell clear "Swivel Base Revelving Stand." Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Please NOTE that the box displays very nice, but it is only graded 'good++' because of a large scratch visible at the upper left corner and other general moderate wear. This kit has an interesting history. The first issue was in the simple and very thin one-piece box. Revell quickly learned that it was too fragile and converted to the two-piece box as it was much more durable and a full-color lithographed 'slick' could be used. In addition to the box change for the second issue, Revell added rivet and very fine raised panel line detail as well as landing gear and the famous clear Revell 'Globe' stand. The second issue had the single-piece clear stand arm and instructions showing it. This arm proved to be very weak and prone to break at the worst point - when young Johnny was done and ready to proudly display his work. For the third issue, Revell changed to the much more durable two piece stand arm with instructions reflecting that, but everything else remained the same.

The missile parts ares still in the factory sealed bag. The other parts were never factory sealed and have been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. In the late 1950s, the first missile model kits sold briskly, so Aurora and Revell both planned extensive lines. However, the missile modeling craze disappeared as quickly as it started. Models that were in the works were canceled or completed if they were far enough along. Those that were completed, like the Nike Hercules, sold poorly and had very short lives, making them rare collector items today.

It is never started, and all the parts are still sealed in the factory 'krinkle' bag. With instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
