UPC Tally-Ho Coach - (ex Miniature Masterpieces / ex Revell), 1/48, 4002-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1960s reissue from the original 1950s molds. Like all Miniature Masterpieces kits, this one is very finely engraved and molded with excellent detail. In addition to the coach it includes four horses, many passengers, driver and a display base. This kit has a long history! 'Miniature Masterpieces' was formed through an alliance of Lou Glaser (Revell) and Steve Adams (Adams Action Models) in 1953. Although having the appearance of an independent company, the firm was run by Revell down to the prototypes being made at the Revell plant. However, there was no evidence of the parent company on the surface. The State Coach of England was the first kit, issued in 1953. More kits of excellent quality followed. Revell completely took over the line in 1954, making the one-year original issues very rare. After Revell no longer saw these as 'market viable' the molds were sold or leased to UPC. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s. All UPC production ended in the 1970s. Eventually Life-Like ended up with the molds and reissued them.

Comet North American F-51 Mustang Struct-O-Speed - Coke Bottle Issue, G11-15

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Dated 1950. Comet advertises that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. This is a small-scale, rubber powered free-flight kit with a wingspan of 8.5 inches. This is a 3D kit (not a profile model) of all die-cut balsa. It does not use any tissue covering as the wood is all external surfaces. Includes illustrated instructions and cut-out insignia. Complete and never started. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
