Onondaga Pottery Company Lackawanna Railroad Oval Serving Platter (Early 1900s) - 13.5 x 9.3 inches

Other Materials

Sold

For you rail fans out there - an all original early 1900s railroad china oval serving platter from the famous Onondaga Pottery Company, Syracuse, New York. Used on either a Lackawanna Railroad dining car or Commissary. Measures 13.5 inches wide and 9.3 inches tall. It has never been touched up. No rim or face chips or cracks. There is a small narrow 1/8 inch long chip in the glazing on the back at the rim where the piece would sit on a table. The gloss is excellent but it has consistent crazing and medium brown stains as shown. Numerous website discuss the removal of such stains, but I did not attempt it. The back is stamped 'O.P.CO. Syracuse China.' which was used from 1897 to 1946. The date code is impressed into a circle - this further narrows the date to pre 1920. The date code is clearly in a circle, so it certainly dates from 1903 to 1911, which is when this date code was used. Unfortunately, the date circle is poorly impressed in the piece and is difficult to read. To my best guess - the final number in the circle is a 6. I cannot read the first number, so it could be anywhere in the 1903 to 1911 range. The weight and manufacturing flaws verify this date range. The piece will be double boxed and insurance is required.

Consolidated Model Engineering Bar Ridge Topper-A - 41 inch Wingspan Class A Gas Powered Free Flight Model Airplane

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

Sold

Rare 1930s model by the designer Gordon Murray. For gas free flight. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals (if originally included). Designed for 'Sniffing Thermals', the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and early gas powered models, all powered by Brown engines, took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all without any operator inputs once the airplane took off. This model held a new AMA record for small engines at one point.

Guillows Nieuport 28 - 18 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, WW-2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

One of a very popular line of World War 1 flying aircraft stick and tissue kits with 18 inch wingspan. Kit features scale plastic wheels, plastic propeller, light vacuform nose cowl, die cut balsa parts, colored tissue, rubber motor and full decals. Includes full size detailed plans. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Pyro Chesapeake Bay Skipjack Oyster Boat 'Carrie Price', 1/60, 269-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Pyro is long out of the plastic model business but is famous today for the esoteric collection of kits they produced. The seemed to care little about popularity but designed kits based on historical significance or local interest. The quality of the kits is generally high. The skipjack 'Carrie Price' is an exact replica of a typical small sailing vessel used along the Chesapeake Bay area to dredge for oysters. The center keel stabilizer could be pulled up for working in very shallow water. Until 1942 sail was the only power permitted for oyster dredging; after 1942 the state passed a law allowing power boats to be used. This lead to almost all the skipjacks being converted to power and having the main mast cut down. Although it's days are past, many yachtsmen restore and sail this beautiful small craft today. This kit has excellent detail and is well molded. The model has never been started. Factory sealed parts bag and instructions.
