Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and were much nicer than most other kits of this type.

The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production.

Hobby Boss HMS Lord Nelson Pre-Dreadnought Battleship, 1/350, 86508

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Highly detailed full-hull model with hundreds of pieces and four frets of photoetched brass parts. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes flag sheet and instructions. HMS Lord Nelson was laid down on May 18, 1905, launched in 1906 and completed in October of 1908. She was the Royal Navy's last pre-dreadnought although the HMS Dreadnought entered service before the Lord Nelson. Subsequently, the Lord Nelson was obsolete before completion, but that did not keep her from an active career. The ship was flagship of the Channel Fleet when the First World War began in 1914. Lord Nelson was transferred to the Mediterranean Sea in early 1915 to participate in the Dardanelles Campaign. She remained there, becoming flagship of the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron, which was later redesignated the Aegean Squadron. After the Ottoman surrender in 1918 the ship moved to the Black Sea where she remained as flagship before returning to the United Kingdom in May 1919. Lord Nelson was placed into reserve upon her arrival and sold for scrap in June 1920.

The actual kit is a very highly detailed full-hull model with over 470 pieces and six frets of photoetched brass parts. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes flag sheet and instructions. The Schleswig-Holstein was laid down in 1905 as one of the five Deutschland-class battleships. These pre-dreadnoughts were obsolete when they entered service. This did not keep the Schleswig-Holstien from a very active career in both World Wars. In WWI she was with the High Seas Fleet at Jutland. Since she was antiquated, this was one of the few ships that the Treaty of Versailles allowed the Germans to keep. Going through many updates, she served as a training ship throughout the 20s and 30s. Schleswig-Holstein fired the first shots of World War II when she bombarded the Polish base at Danzig's Westerplatte in the early morning hours of 1 September 1939. The ship was used as a training vessel for the majority of the war. She was sunk by British bombers in Gotenhafen in December 1944. Schleswig-Holstein was subsequently salvaged and then beached for use by the Soviet Navy as a target. As of 1990, the ship's bell was on display in the Bundeswehr Military History Museum in Dresden.
